A den under the stairs
A friend’s old spaniel arrives on Monday for the week, because you are the person who can be trusted with a creature that shakes at fireworks. Tuesday and Wednesday, make a den under the stairs with a blanket and something that smells of home. On Thursday, Bonfire Night, draw the curtains by four, put the radio on and sit on the floor for as long as it takes. Stragglers may go on until Saturday. On Sunday the two of you can walk beside the water, in peace.
Love
You may be invited to the big display on Thursday, by someone who is disappointed when you say no. Say it anyway. If your partner goes without you, ask them to bring back a toffee apple and one good story. Staying in with a frightened animal is not a failure of friendship; it is your idea of a perfect evening, and you are allowed to admit it.
Work and money
On Wednesday a colleague may spend forty minutes telling you about their week, and you may come away carrying it. Before you do, ask what they would like to happen next. Close your inbox at four on Thursday and leave on the dot; your notes can wait. A headset and one quiet afternoon on Friday would help you catch up.
Body and mind
You may absorb the dog’s fear more than you expect, so eat early on Thursday and keep a blanket on the floor for yourself. Music with no words works for both of you. After the last rocket, lie down with your shoulders on the rug and breathe slowly. Give yourself a long lie-in on Saturday, dog permitting.
